If you’re like me you wake up to the audio track of two German Shephard dogs barking for mommy to give them attention. They became so content with their dog beds or my bed that I didn’t give a dog house any serious thought until a few months passed and I started begging for space on my own bed, and though I love my dogs I also would have loved to have my bed off the menu!
My best friend is a Vet and has a well-trained dog of her own, definitely the winner of the best dog with manners award! She recommended giving them a place of their own and so the dog house hunt began. I had so many questions, what do I need to consider to get the best dog house, what do my dogs need in their house, will they be as content there, what can I add to help them transition and feel comfortable safe, and content there and not my bed.
I searched all the keywords pet house, dog house, dogs, and I was overwhelmed, everything seemed right but not so right for my dogs. I wanted them to be happy but it had to suit our lifestyle and I had to be content with my purchase. After much research, I came up with a shortlist and chose the perfect dog house for us.
Now it’s their favorite place and it forces me to go outside to play with them more! They lounge on hot days and I no longer have to worry about them being outside for too long or being caught in the rain when I’m not there. It’s durable and they run and bump into it with no problem. It’s great seeing them enjoy outside and even better seeing them enjoy their home away from home. It’s been the best purchase we made for them.
Dogs are like family to us
For a lot of us, our dogs are like family, and much like family, we want them to be safe. Whether they love to sleep snuggled in your sheets and have taken over half your bed or prefer rooming outdoors, you want them to have the best protection and feel at home. Dogs need a house for a lot of reasons, especially outdoors. It gives them a safe place and a sense of security, both indoors and outdoors, independence, and of course, provides shelter. For this reason, it needs to be comfortable and able to withstand all weather conditions, keeping your furry friend cool in hot summer months, warm on those cold winter nights, and most of all dry in rainy or snowy weather.
Having a waterproof dog house for your pet involves more than just the roof or door. A wood dog house is primarily for protection from the elements and your extra large dog needs to feel like it is a safe place for them to rest. Dogs quickly determine whether an area is suitable for them and so your dog house purchase has to take this into consideration. If your dog is too cold or hot, they will never choose that house for shelter. Waterproofing your dog house provides your dog with a safe, dry place to rest especially if it’s raining or snowing and you aren’t home. So make sure you take your dog’s needs into consideration when you purchase a dog house and your dog/dogs will definitely be happy.
How do you waterproof a dog house? Well, an idea is to add products to your dog house to waterproof it, which you can find on amazon com, such as Polyurethane, Cementitious Coating, EPDM Rubber, Rubberized Asphalt, Thermoplastic, Bituminous Membrane, and PVC Waterproofing Membrane. These may take quite a bit of work and if you’re not up for that mammoth task, draping linoleum or tarp can help keep water out of your dog house especially a metal dog house is another option. Or simply, buying one that’s already waterproof!
A wood dog house may be the best budget pick
In your search for the perfect dog house for your dog whether indoors or outdoor in your backyard, there are many features. Many want to make sure that the outdoor dog house is made with weather-resistant non-toxic material, heavy-duty, easy cleaning, good air circulation, some even look for features like a floor heater! Whatever your needs, it all comes down to you wanting to protect your pet! Whether they are extra-large or tiny teacups your pet house needs to have 5 stars by your standards and contain all the items you need for you to double-tap and add to your cart.
So how do you chose the perfect outdoor house for them? Let’s talk about that and all the features you need to consider when buying a pet dog house or waterproofing your own and how to ensure they have the best environment to keep them safe, secure, comfortable, and happy.
Insulation is arguably one of the most important features is an insulated dog house. Anywhere your pet feels comfortable, safe, and secure is ideal when they aren’t in the arms of their owner, especially on those really hot or cold days. Some may add a blanket at the base but that doesn’t prevent those cold winds coming in from the side.
Ventilation is of course, this is at the top for some, especially in hot areas. Running to the dog house for shade makes no sense if it’s essentially a hot box. Ventilation from all angles is key!
Durability is especially important when considering your purchase. Investing in a dog house that not only has all the features you need but also lasts and withstands various weather conditions is important. Also, a dog house that will hold up to your playful pet coming and going is essential.
Everyone can build outdoor dog houses
Whether or not the dog house is easy to assemble is something to consider. Not everyone is a handyman/woman and so be careful with extra-large, heavy-duty, solid wood dog houses as they may require extra tools and lots of patience. You may prefer to look for easy to assemble outdoor dog houses as long as they protect your pet.
The elevation is an added feature that many consider necessary. An outdoor dog house that comes with a raised floor is able to keep your dog dry in the case of any puddles or flooding and aids in insulation.
The size is arguably the top in this list of 7 best things to consider. Whether it’s a solid wood outdoor dog house, plastic, or even a metal dog house, size is key. Not only the size of the dog house but also the size of the door whether it be rectangular or round. Make sure to take that into account when you search.
The best dog house for outdoors is one that has all these qualities, although portability is optional. It must be able to stand up to harsh weather and keep your dog happy, safe, and dry. Your dog should not suffer or freeze like they usually do at a dog kennel.
If you live in a hotter area like me or summers get really hot, a dog house with added vents and extra spacing between floorboards are great for added ventilation. If you’re battling cold weather purchase a dog house with raised floors, insulation, and tight seals. Adding extra seals, blankets, tarpaulin or heating pads can help keep your dog warm.
